Club Strive
Club STRIVE is a track for blind students currently in 7-12th grade. Club STRIVE meets the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10am-4pm at the Division of Services for the Blind & Visually Impaired. Cheralyn Creer is the Program Coordinator for Club STRIVE and has a team of blind instructors who have expertise in the areas of Technology, Orientation & Mobility, Active Daily Living Skills, Recreation, Social Skills, Employment & College Readiness Skills. Through the Utah Network for Mentoring Excellence, Cheralyn has created a strong network of blind adult Mentors who are willing to volunteer their time and present on specific topics or network with the students. Through positive mentoring, students will dispel any myths and/or negative belief. With the proper skills, techniques and attitudes, students will instill in themselves that they can be successful, contributing members to society.
Club STRIVE iPad Challenge
The 2010-2011 iPad Challenge is officially over, but look for an new challenge to start in the Fall 2011. This program was developed to motivate students to apply the things they learn at school or at Club STRIVE while at home. It was also created to encourage students who live in all areas of Utah. It’s difficult for students living in rural Utah to travel long distances to fully participate in the monthly program. Students earned “iPad points” through participation in Club STRIVE activities, service in their community, daily Braille reading, technology & web challenges through email & social networks. The number of points determined how many times a student’s name was submitted into the drawing. It only took 1 point to win, but the chances of winning obviously increased with higher points. A drawing was held during the 2011 NFB State Convention Banquet. The winner won an iPad 2 and 2 hours of training.
