Utah Association of Blind Students

The Utah Association of Blind Students is an affiliate of a larger movement called the National Association of Blind Students (NABS). NABS is the division of students organized by the National Federation of the Blind, the most motivated and influential organization in existence, comprised of over fifty thousand active members nation-wide. UABS has many goals and objectives which it strives to achieve through hard work and determination.

One function that UABS is responsible for is an annual student business meeting. UABS holds an annual business meeting in conjunction with the National Federation of the Blind of Utah state convention. UABS students share a positive philosophy about blindness. We believe that blind students, with the assistance of good training in skills of blindness, such as independent travel, Braille, and living skills, are entitled to equal treatment in the classroom and on the campus. We deserve equal treatment, which means we must also share equal responsibility. We do not ask for handouts or modifications. We want our voices to be heard, and we want to have control over our lives and the direction they will take in the future. For these reasons, a big part of what we stress is advocacy for students, because we believe that blind students, more than anyone else, know what they do and do not need to be successful in school. We distribute important information to give students the knowledge they need to be self-advocates.

This is our mission in UABS. We would love for you to join with us to help make our goals and dreams come true. Together, we can change misconceptions and misunderstandings of blindness, and improve possibilities for blind students in Utah.

Do you have questions about technology, training, advocacy, college, living independently, internships, or scholarship opportunities? If so, the Utah Association of Blind Students (UABS) would like to hear from you. This organization, composed entirely of blind and visually impaired students throughout the state of Utah, offers a network of information, many possible friendships, and a wealth of opportunities to enhance your social and academic experiences in high school and college. UABS also benefits from the example set forth by many blind role models who have already successfully conquered college and have found employment. Together, we educate each other, as well as society about the capabilities of blind students.
